The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which connects Maryland's eastern and western shores, has unfortunately experienced a significant number of suicides over the years. According to data from the Maryland Transportation Authority, 42 people have died by suicide at the bridge between 2008 and 2018.
The bridge's height of 186 feet above the water, its long and narrow structure, and strong winds can make it particularly challenging for law enforcement and rescue crews to respond quickly to a potential suicide attempt.
In recent years, the Maryland Transportation Authority has implemented a number of initiatives to prevent suicides at the bridge, including the installation of suicide prevention signs and call boxes, along with suicide prevention fencing. The agency has also increased patrols by law enforcement officials on the bridge.
